Art for 5-11s: Heroes, Villains, Monsters

 Age: 5-11

Cost: Free – donations welcomed

Tuesday 24th July 10am-12pm

A superhero with heroic anatomy? Creepy villainous henchmen? Mutant monsters? Mythical creatures? Learn how to create your own heroes, villains and monsters on paper with a professional local artist. What special powers will your hero have? What vehicle would your evil boss drive? Or just how slimy can you make your creature? Come along and create your characters, the only thing you need to bring along is your imagination!

Woodwork skills & social enterprise

Ages: 14-17

Cost: Free

Starts Monday 23rd July (with 5 further sessions)

Fancy seeing if you have a talent for making things out of wood? Want experience of setting up and running a social enterprise? We will help you decide what you want to make, support you to create your pieces, including showing you how to use tools and machinery, and will then help you with the process of setting up a social enterprise and selling your items (with proceeds coming back into the charity). This is a great opportunity to develop a new creative talent and add business skills to your CV. Come along to the first session to find out more and help develop ideas for what to build. Create your own podcast

Ages: 13-16

Lipstick Libraries: micro-blogging event

Ages: 11-16

Join writer, journalist and blogger, Alice Purkiss, at this fun and informative blogging event, exploring the way social media can be used as a blogging platform, discovering cool people to follow on social media and talking about how social media can be cultivated as a healthy place to exist online. Plus, whilst we explore ways to use social media for storytelling, you can relax, paint your nails and enjoy some nibbles.

The Clutter Monster: Reading and Q&A with author Sally Walford

Ages: All welcome

The Clutter Monster lives in the land of Mess, a monster who loves nothing more than very messy children and very messy playrooms. This story for children, tells the tale of one dark night when two messy children are spotted by The Clutter Monster. Only The Decluttering Dog has the secret of how to make the Monster go. Will he get to them in time to save their fate? This delightful tale encourages children to tidy up their toys and keep on top of that clutter! Hear Sally Walford read from The Clutter Monster and take part in a Q&A with the author and founder of declutterme.london, an inspirational lifestyle business helping people to prioritise their belongings and declutter their way to long term happiness, fulfilment and a clearer mind.

Tall Tales: Creative writing workshop

Ages: 6-16

Three week course running:

In this short writing course, you will be introduced to the art of storytelling and the versatility of language. Starting with some easy and fun writing exercises to learn how to write characters, dialogue, settings
and moods, participants will work towards creating your own short stories.

Young Journalists Course

Ages: 14-16

Six week course running:

Are you interested in developing your skills as a journalist? Do you want to create your own web content and publish online? Then this is the course for you…. Through this four week course you will gain insight into how journalism works, have the opportunity to develop your writing and reporting skills, develop, write, edit and upload content to the web and learn basic CMS skills. As a group you will have the opportunity to create your own website and decide whether you want to produce a final printed product.

Dance Showcase

Ages: Varied

Dates: Week commencing 20th August

During August expect a variety of dance classes designed for participants from 2 years old to those who are over 50. There will be opportunities for young participants to showcase new learned skills and for adults to work on their fitness and well-being. You are also invited to our open dance film screenings.

Once upon a Time: Make a play in a week

Ages: 6-8

Cost: £22 for all five sessions. Sibling discount available, please enquire.

Monday 6th August to Friday 10th August, every morning 10am-12:30pm. Please note: On the final morning we would like to invite family, carers and friends to drop-off their children at 10am and stay for a coffee downstairs in the library hub. We will then invite you upstairs at 11am to watch a showcase performance by the children.

With nothing more than the beginning of a story, a few objects and a whole lot of imagination, the group will make a play in a week. For four days, the group will explore improvising, storytelling and working together as a team to create their own unique production that will be performed for friends and family on the fifth day.

Sewing Machine Driving Licence: Learn how to use a sewing machine

Ages: 8-15

Cost: £35

Two session course: Monday 6th August, 10am-12:30pm and Tuesday 7th August 1pm-3:30pm

Join KNOW HOW YOU and Splattermake Sewing School and get your Passport to SEWING in this half day workshop aimed to get you using a sewing machine confidently. Learn how to set up and thread the
machine, basic and decorative stitches and make a simple project. You don’t need to bring anything with you, we supply the machine and all the materials you need.

Little Brushstrokes: Summer art camp

Ages: 5-11

Cost: £20 per day or £90 for the whole week. Sibling discount available, please enquire.

Attend for the whole week or just for one day: Monday 13th August-Friday 17th August, 9:30am-4:30pm

Please note: The group will visit a local museum on the Wednesday. Children will need to bring a packed lunch, water bottle and snacks each day. Fruit for afternoon snack will be provided.

Budding artists have the opportunity to discover new artistic skills and techniques and learn about different famous artists and their work as they spend a week having fun, creating and exploring. During the week we will look at different artists such as Frida Kahlo, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali and Vincent Van Gogh and explore different techniques, mediums and materials. You will have the opportunity to create your own portraits, abstract art and sculptures as well as a collaborative piece of artwork that will be displayed in the library. On Wednesday we will take a trip to an art exhibition.
