Crystal Palace Library of Things is looking for an energetic Community Activator to drive borrowing and local participation!

This is a leadership role in the Crystal Palace neighbourhood, reinventing local people’s relationship with stuff.


Time input: 48 hours per month (12 hours per week)

Remuneration: £550 per month (~£11.50 per hour, above London Living Wage)

Location: Option for base at Upper Norwood Library Hub, Westow Hill, SE19 1TJ, plus some time spent out and about in Crystal Palace and surrounding neighbourhoods. Option for remote working too.

Duration: Monthly rolling contract (up to a maximum of 12 months)

Flexibility: The role will include weekend and evening hours, but can be flexible around an existing schedule

Employer: You will be employed by social enterprise Library of Things Limited.

Personal development: Training from the Library of Things Community Manager, plus a peer support network as the Library of Things network grows around London.

Recruiting frequent borrowers: Recruit local people to join and regularly borrow from Crystal Palace Library of Things – 5 hours per week

  • Ensure Crystal Palace Library of Things is represented at local events
  • Post on local Facebook groups and similar to update people about Crystal Palace Library of Things

Training volunteers & staff: Galvanise local people with the time and talent to help run Crystal Palace Library of Things – 5 hours per week

  • Recruit* local people to do:
    • Regular promotion of Crystal Palace Library of Things
    • Thing Fixing (supervised & coordinated by paid Library of Things ‘Thing Wizard’)
  • Train* Host Space staff and volunteers in basic LoT functionality
  • Ensure a monthly CPLoT social is organised for staff & volunteers to increase community cohesion and ownership

Be available as a Library of Things point of contact both in the Crystal Palace area and with the Library of Things team – 2 hours per week

  • Regularly check-in with local partners Upper Norwood Library Hub and Crystal Palace Transition Town to share LoT successes & challenges
  • Join a monthly check-in call with Library of Things HQ
  • Join quarterly socials with Community Activator peers
  • Any enquiries and suggestions from local people regarding local outreach, events and participation

Potential future opportunities

  • Work with local people to co-organise a practical skill-sharing programme that complements Library of Things, featuring events like Repair Parties, Mending Meet-ups etc
  • Become a trainer for other Library of Things Community Activators
